For your vessel to be properly documented you must mark it as follows:

“The official number assigned to documented vessels, preceded by the abbreviation "NO." must be marked in block-type Arabic numerals at least three inches high on some clearly visible interior structural part of the hull. The number must be permanently affixed so that alteration, removal, or replacement would be obvious and cause some scarring or damage to the surrounding hull area.”

Selecting a location for your Boat Documentation Number:

Boat Documentation Mounting ScrewsThese are common areas that meet the requirement.  Important considerations are attaching the numbers to structural area of the vessel.  Numbers are typically attached in areas other than living area of the cabin for aesthetic reasons.

  • Bow anchor locker
  • Engine Room
  • In Cabin

Installing The Documentation Numbers:

You should install the documentation number in such a way that there will be obvious scarring if the numbers are removed. To do this you will use one or both of the following:

  1. Stainless Steel/Brass screws (6 or 8 x 1.5”-2”)
  2. Marine Adhesive (such as 3M 5200)

You will spread a generous amount of adhesive as shown below.
